Finding a new addition to your routine should feel considered. Attractive packaging is only the introduction; the next step is reading the label and checking how the product works with your skin.
Read before you begin
Check the ingredient list, directions and warnings. Keep the packaging nearby when you first use a product. A serum, lotion or cream may have very different directions depending on its formula, so avoid assuming that every product belongs in the same daily routine.
Try a small area first
For general cosmetic products, the American Academy of Dermatology suggests testing a small area, such as the underside of your arm or the bend of your elbow, twice daily for seven to ten days. Use the amount you would normally apply and follow the product’s contact-time instructions, especially for rinse-off products. This at-home check cannot guarantee that a future reaction will not happen.
Pay attention to the response
If you develop redness, itching or swelling, wash the product off gently and stop using it. Seek medical advice for a severe or persistent reaction. A dermatologist can investigate recurring reactions; a home product trial is different from medical patch testing.
